Diversity in the classroom

Given your understanding of intentional and unintentional racism both through teacher-student interactions and curriculum development, how would you encourage diversity in the classroom?

The first step to encourage diversity in the classroom is to make sure that the teachers and other adults at the school come from many backgrounds. Starting at very young ages these students will look up to teachers as role models. So it would be better if they grow up seeing their role models as many different races. They should see that people of all kinds can become these role models. This would eliminate the idea that only one kind of person is capable of succeeding. Furthermore it could encourage a kid. As students grow older they become more aware of racism in the world around them. This includes at school, where they start to notice discrimination and micro-aggressions. They also experience racism in the media and at home. Having class discussions with teachers would be very beneficial because it would allow a time for students to point out discrimination that they are seeing and discuss strategies to deal with it.
