Week 4: Micro-Aggression

  While the dominant middle class culture plays a huge role in micro-aggressions and other racial inequalities that are prevalent in our current society, even without it, racial prejudices will continue to exist. As we grow up, various racial, and even sexual, prejudices are instilled into our minds and ultimately by the time we become adults, these ideas become a part of us. For that reason, many of us fail to realize that such racial prejudices exist in our minds. Even worse, some may even make racially offensive comments without even realizing. These comments, although unintentional and without any malicious intent, may severely hurt others and encourage further racial prejudice. In order to eliminate, or at least decrease, such cases of micro-aggression, it is important to identify the source of these ideas and more importantly to raise awareness. If media changes their portrayal of certain racial groups, there will accordingly be less people who will be influenced by such ideas.
