Microagressions Week 4

I definitely agree with the statement "Microagressions and other inequities will inevitable persist largely due to the dominant middle class culture of power." Microagressions are present in our everyday life because people never acknowledge that there are microagressions and how just because you might "not mean it" when you use one, doesn't mean it's not hurtful. There are many microagressions I have heard about myself being biracial including "What are you?" "You can't be white" etc. No one feels good about themselves when people use microagressions because people feel as though they are put in this category that is not 'people'. If someone said "What are you?"to someone, how do you think that would make a person feel?

You can tell depending on if you are close with the person or by how they're saying it if they truly didn't mean to be rude or if they did and just didn't care/realize. Like I mentioned before, microagressions are present in our world today because people don't acknowledge and own what they're saying. Microagressions will inevitably always be present. When trying to find a solution for a problem, you need to look at the root of the problem and that's how you can work to fixing it. There are so many people today that don't even know what microagressions are and who don't care about what they are saying that there will always be microagressions.

I think if microagressions were better defined or talked about more then they would be less common. There are 2 types of people that I believe use microagressions. There are people who are nasty and cynical that just want to be mean and know what they're saying or there are the people who say something without thinking and then realize what they said and apologize. Even if someone doesn't mean it, it is still rude.

There are ways that we can get rid of microagressions in our society. One of the ways we can do that is by spreading awareness, just like any other issue. Once people are aware of what they are saying, they should hopefully stop.
