Destiny Ciliberti - Affirmative action

Blog #3

Affirmative Action creates reverse racism. Discuss.

Affirmative Action was created in order to stop discrimination in the employment process. Affirmative action states that you can not discriminate against a potential employee because of their race, gender, sexual orientation, or religion. Now while Affirmative action is a great thing, it can sometimes be detrimental to those it's trying to help. I personally don't believe that Affirmative action can create reverse racism but others would wholeheartedly disagree with my opinion. There are people who believe that because of Affirmative action, certain people are hired because they satisfy a quota as opposed to actually being a skilled contender for the position in which they are applying for. As a minority myself, there has been times where I questioned whether employers saw me as a skilled individual or a means to diversifying their business. A mindset like that leads to a person constantly questioning themselves and becoming very hesitant in everything they do. That isn't the case everytime but you still can't help but wonder whether or not if you are valued as a hard working employee or just another statistic.
